You can make money in a lot of different ways as a writer. I wasn't aware of this years ago after I'd graduated high school. I'd been homeschooled my whole life so a guidance or career counselor weren't apart of our graduation process. I had to figure out at seventeen years old what I wanted to do for the rest of my life as a job, and I didn't pick writing. Back then, I didn't know that I liked writing as much as I did. If I had, I would have made different choices.
Since then, I've found resources and information about how to transition to become a full-time writer or pick it up as an additional income stream.
Here's a short list.
Author: write a book. Make it available in multiple formats -- ebook, paperback, hardback, audiobook.
If you're a non-fiction author, you can also create workbooks and courses around what you write or teach. You can also get booked for speaking engagements in person or online. Being an author is an authority builder. People respect us wordy types.
Freelance content writer: blog posts, social media captions, books, ghostwriting, scriptwriter
Freelance copywriter: webpage copy, sales pages, landing pages, emails, video sales script
Copy and content writing are similar but different. Content writing is informative. You are encouraging, entertaining, or educating -- the Big E's. Copywriting is persuasive. You're leading a reader to take an action -- opt or buy into an offer, click a button, do something.
Nothing in your business will work without marketing -- not ads, I'm not a fan. I mean content creation and lead generation. I mean having conversations with the right people. If you want to have those conversations online, you need to know the tactics and strategies that will put you in front of the right people.
I struggled for literal years to get my marketing together. No one was finding me, so it fed my doubt about whether I could make a living writing. I'm a good writer, but it doesn't matter if I'm the only one who knows.
Can you relate?
Knowing that you have something valuable worth sharing, but you can't get anyone to look at it. It's frustrating and makes you doubt. It makes you think you should just give up and quit.
Then I invested in a coaching program that helped me. I'd consumed a lot of free content up to that point, and I couldn't put the pieces together. I couldn't figure out how to create a system that made sense and made profit. Now it's something I understand for myself and for my clients.
